During the month of September, students in grades 4 - 8 are invited to join the teams that will represent St. Eugene in the Spring. Any student who was interested, received a packet explaining the books included in this year's reading list and brief summaries about each of these titles. At the end of September, students who wished to pursue this activity and were ready to make a commitment to their team, participated in a "book draft" during lunch. In this way, each student chose which books he or she was most interested in reading over the course of the next several months. Each student is responsible for reading approximately 6 - 8 books for this activity.
During the course of the school year, students have the following responsibilities. They meet with their teams during a lunch period every week or two to read and/or discuss the books as a group. As students complete more of the books, we hold mock competitions during this time in order to ready the students for the countywide event in the Spring. Students choose a team name and a T-shirt design. There is no cost to the students or their families. All books are available in the school library. A Bake Sale is held in February to cover the cost of the T-shirts; families are asked to send in items for that sale.
Support and encouragement from home will help these students progress, even when homework and other activities put demands on their time. Students are asked to fill out a brief log about each book that they read as a way of refreshing their memory about the book months from now. The questions that they create to "quiz" each other become part of the fun. We want them to enjoy the reading and feel good about what they contribute to the team effort!
Students who may wish to test themselves on the books that they read, can visit websites that offer quizzes (both timed and untimed) about several of the books. The links may be found below.

This club is intended to encourage all students to read and be a part of a team, regardless of their reading ability. Books are available at a variety of reading levels to accommodate everyone. We hope many of our students will discover just how much fun reading can be!
